Being a bit of a control freak I have always wanted to have full control over my information, to decide what to make searchable through Google, to decide who gets access to what photos and documents and so on. I therefore run my own blog server, my own photo server and I store my documents on my own ssh file server instead of in the cloud (despite of all the free gigabytes). I only run Linux and other open source software in the servers. As I see it, keeping software open source is the best way of guaranteeing that the software doesn’t get corrupted. I also try to keep to best practice when it comes to securing my servers.
Having followed the articles in The Guardian and The Washington Post the last week I’m glad to say I have made the right choice. Not that it matters so much in practice but it certainly matters in principle.
